New report shows many household appliances sold to US are not up to code
The US Department of Agriculture said Friday that many household and garden appliances sold in the US last year had not met the latest federal safety standards.
The USDA said it’s working with the manufacturers of the most popular household appliances in the country, including Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and Dandelion Tea, to test their products.
The agency also said it was monitoring more than 500,000 reported reports of broken or defective appliances and has opened more than 200 safety investigations, according to a news release.
The latest update comes after the US Food and Drug Administration said on March 24 that the number of reported deaths related to noncompliance with food safety standards jumped to 6,851 in 2016, from 6,081 the previous year.
